Our annual Adopt-A-Senior Drive was kicked off September 1st with the Foodland Give Aloha Campaign.  Our goal is to raise nearly $100,000 by December to maintain the current level of service, including our special holiday deliveries to homebound seniors.  During this critical economic time with rising fuel and food costs, giving now is more important than ever.  This is so important that ABC Stores has stepped up to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000 during the month of September.  Please give a gift today and take advantage of this opportunity to double your impact.  Donations can also be made at any Foodland or Sack N Save checkout through September 30, 2008 (up to $249 per person).  Give them the Lanakila Give Aloha Code: 77091 and Foodland and Western Union will match all donations up to a total of $300,000 for all organizations combined.

Lanakila Meals on Wheels is Hawaii's largest and only island-wide meal provider, serving more than a thousand of our elderly neighbors in need each day.  More than a nutritious meal, volunteers also deliver a warm, friendly smile, a moment of conversation and friendship.

Please Adopt-A-Senior today to help ensure no senior goes hungry.  Perhaps you can even help inspire others to give by spearheading a matching program through your company.  For more information on this tax-deductible opportunity, please contact Marlena or Carole at 531-0555 or cr@lanakilapacific.org, or visit www.lanakilamow.org. Mahalo for your consideration!

What do you think of when you hear Lanakila Rehabilitation Center? Most people think of Lanakila Crafts, lauhala baskets, Christmas ornaments, pillows - all at bargain prices. But Lanakila has always been much more than crafts. The organization has provided training and employment services for individuals with disabilities for more than 69 years. We also offer a wide range of social enterprises, staffed by those we serve, to provide services to the community that help us in moving toward financial self-sufficiency.  To read more of the Midweek, Business Round Table story, click here.

To help encourage participation in the election process, Lanakila Pacific welcomes candidates from all parties to share their vision and views with program participants in a non-partisan manner.  Most recently, Board of Education candidates,Janis Akuna and Carol Mon Lee visited Lanakila Teaching and Learning Centers (TLC) and answered questions such as their views on special education. It was an excellent opportunity for participants to exercise their voice, and to encourage inclusion of people with disabilities in the process.  To learn more about education opportunities at Lanakila Pacific, please feel free to contact our community relations office at 531-0555 or cr@lanakilapacific.org.

On Saturday, September 20th, employees of the Central Pacific Bank Beretania Branch provided much more than excellent customer service when they participated in Lanakila Meals on Wheels' weekend delivery of meals to homebound seniors. Part of a growing nation-wide trend of businesses encouraging community service work by employees, CPB Beretania is the first business to partner with Lanakila Meals on Wheels for weekend deliveries. This energetic and well-dressed team delivered more than 35 meals to homebound seniors in the downtown area. CPB Branch Manager and regular home delivery volunteer, Dean Yoshida wanted his employees to do more service work in the community. Since Dean volunteers regularly, the choice to expose his team to the needs of our seniors was an easy one.  A big mahalo goes out to CPB for all their support throughout the year. Way to go CPB!

After learning about the recent gas thefts from Lanakila Meals on Wheels, Five Star and Wireless Magic, LLC stepped forward to help install a security camera system to help deter future thefts, and KM Electrical Systems donated the electrical work.  Thanks to their generous donations, Lanakila staff and volunteers were reminded that despite challenges, goodwill persists.  Special Mahalo to Five Star, Wireless Magic and KM Electrical Systems for their generous donations of time and equipment to help restore a sense of security for Lanakila Meals on Wheels!  For the related KITV news story, click here: http://www.kitv.com/news/16342105/detail.html

A big mahalo goes out to B&J Signs & Graphics, run by the sibling team of Benny Padilla and his sister Joanna Padilla Anderson.  Benny & Joanna provided Lanakila with excellent customer service as well as very reasonable rates, to re-brand our fleet of vehicles with our new logos. They were flexible with our challenging schedules and made themselves available at our convenience. As many of our staff put it, “their work was impeccable, our vehicles look great!”

Lanakila Meals on Wheels has been selected as the winner of the Platinum Award, including a $3,000 grant from the Meals on Wheels Association of America in recognition of the success of our 2008 March for Meals Campaign.  This is the highest award given to the handful of members nationwide who exceeded expectations, using creativity and collaboration to make the campaign work in their communities.  The success of Lanakila Meals on Wheels' March for Meals campaign, in addition to the $3,000 grant received from MOWAA, will fuel momentum for an even more successful campaign next year. Our warmest mahalo to MOWAA for their support, and to all the volunteers who helped "March for Meals"!

Promoting Healthy Aging: Chronic Disease Self Management Program
The Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP) includes workshops given in community settings, facilitated by trained leaders who teach techniques that promote healthy aging.  Subjects covered include self-management of chronic diseases such as heart disease,
arthritis, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, among others.

The goal of CDSMP is to keep seniors as healthy as possible for as long as possible, thus reducing healthcare costs and providing assistance to family caregivers.

Lanakila Meals on Wheels is one of the Kupuna Care providers selected to participate in this program, funded by a $300,000 grant from the National Council on Aging. Hawai'i is one of just eight states to receive the funds, which come from a three-year private grant. The plan focuses on promoting exercise (Enhance Fitness) and the Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP), both of which have been shown to help seniors. That's important in a state where the elderly population grew nearly four times faster than the national average between 1970 and 2000, according to the Executive Office on Aging and the University of Hawai'i Center on the Family.

Both Enhance Fitness and CDSMP is a six week workshop that was developed by Stanford University. Seniors are taught how to manage their diseases and are encouraged to meet with others who have the same challenges. The goal is to help seniors develop skills needed to deal with illnesses, to continue their normal lives and to deal with their emotions.

Lanakila Meals on Wheels' Deputy Director, Brandon Mitsuda, has been trained and certified as a CDSMP master trainer. Four Group Dining leaders have also been trained as lay leaders. Our Paoakalani Group Dining seniors were the first to attend this program with very promising results, and the program has been expanded to our Susannah Wesley Group Dining Center.  The goal is to train more staff to become master trainers, and to introduce the program to all the Group Dining Centers.

On August 1st, Mr. Andrew Aoki from KANU Hawaiigave an informative talk to a captivating Lanakila Teaching and Learning Centers (TLC) audience on how each one of us can play a vital part in preserving paradise--our beloved aina.  KANU Hawaii  is a community of people drawing on island strengths to make Hawaii a model of environmental sustainability, economic residence and compassionate community.  This vision starts with changing ourselves then asking others to change with us.  Through hard work, being good stewards of our land and living together despite our differences, we can help bring our families, schools, and communities together in working toward a better future.  Simple things such as picking up litter, recycling our throw-aways or saving water can be the start of preserving paradise.  Valuing our natural resources and respecting our environment will benefit everyone.  Lanakila TLC Participants asked relevant questions and were all given “LIVE ALOHA” bumper stickers.  It was a very interesting presentation.  What about you...how will you help to preserve paradise for our future generations?
